Visualizing Takedown Requests: Google Transparency Report

Google receives tens of thousands of requests from governments each year to remove content from its network of products such as Web Search, YouTube, AdWords and more. The reasons for requesting the removal of content can range from enforcing copyright laws to censoring hate speech to stifling government criticism to protecting national security.

Since 2010, Google has been releasing semi-annual reports detailing how many takedown requests they have received from individual governments and for what reasons. Here, I hope to visualize the data from these reports to allow viewers to see which parts of the world are responsible for removing which types of content, which Google products are most often targeted with takedown requests, and trends and patterns in the takedown requests that Google receives from governments,
