Sea Transportation Network
Series of visualizations of sea transport data I developed at Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design (http://ciid.dk) during 2011. All paths were traced based on real GPS coordinates of the vessels during months of 2010. Ships visible in the video are simulated agents following the paths.
What's interesting in this visualization is how from this chaotic network of connections a number of patterns emerge. From hubs like Suez or Panama, through transportation belt between Europe and Asia, to how spreaded the routes in Pacific Ocean are. Surprising is that espite invisible geographical information we can still recognize shapes of the continents like Africa.
