Understanding our healthcare options can be overwhelming. We have tools to help us find the best restaurant, car or house. But what about choosing the best hospital? Optimal Hospital (myoptimahospital.com) helps users explore their hospital options using 8 different data sets from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). A main component of Optimal Hospital is the hospital recommender which is a weighted formula using 5 different variables; care, price, service, communication, and environment. The user weights the relative of importance of each factor to produce an aggregated hospital score. Optimal Hospital leverages Tableau, a data visualization solution, so the data is visualized in an intuitive, interactive manner. The tool has 4 major components: a homepage; a city profile that compares all regional hospitals; a hospital profile which provides data specific to one hospital; and the price profile which shows the relative cost of different procedures. The data and the tool can be downloaded from Tableau so other people can create their own data visualizations.
