International Relations

International Relations

Our graphic shows relationships between countries based on passenger data over a 20 year span. It is based on the hypothesis that a country's relations are better and/or closer to another country, if more people are traveling between the two countries. In addition our graphic shows how this relationship has changed over time: circles presenting countries move on a line further or closer away from the chosen country. Countries are color coded by continent, which adds an additional layer of information: Is a county more connected to its neighbors than to countries in other continents? How have relations between allies changed over time? Our graphic is interactive (this part is not done, as we ran out of time): a user can 1. choose a country he/she wants to investigate, 2. click a date to see the relationship change over time and 3. click on a country (circle) to view the number of passengers traveling between the chosen country and the clicked country.
