Evolution of the population in the 590 most populated cities

This visualization represents the 590 most populated cities sorted column by column by their population between 1950 and 2010, in 5 year intervals, and projected for 2015,2020,2025. In the interactive version, availalble at http://blog.impure.com/?p=986 , shapes can be rollovered in order to highlight individual cities and see how their population changed through time compared to the others. Each column is normalized to the total population in all surveyed cities, so what you can see for each city at each year is its position among the other cities and their population in terms of proportion. Colors in the visualization are applied according to cities geographic coordinates: Hue varies with longitude, Saturation is always 1 and Value varies with latitude, based on the HSV color model.
